搜索引擎编辑
Ecosia最初提供了雅虎的搜索结果与必应、维基百科的技术组合。广告由雅虎提供，作为与雅虎收入分享协议的一部分。[10]
现在，Ecosia的搜索结果由必应提供，并由公司自己的算法增强。[11]
Ecosia致力于保护用户隐私。搜索会被加密，不会永久存储，Ecosia也不会将数据出售给第三方广告商。Ecosia在隐私政策中声明，它不创建基于搜索历史记录的个人配置文件，也不使用任何诸如Google分析的外部跟踪工具。[12]
Ecosia宣称，在该网站每次搜索会获得0.005欧元的广告收益，而种植一棵树的成本为0.25欧元，因此每搜索50次所获得的广告收益足够种一棵树[註 1]。这些树木在15年的预计寿命内，平均每棵能吸收50千克二氧化碳。如果Ecosia的市场占有率达到现在Google的水平，他们所种的树木能吸收全球二氧化碳总排放量的15%，足以抵消全球汽车尾气排放。[13]

Ecosia于2009年12月7日启动，恰逢联合国在哥本哈根举行的气候谈判。[14]随着时间的推移，Ecosia支持了各种植树项目。2010年12月之前，Ecosia的资金都捐赠给了世界自然基金会德国分会的一个项目，用于保护亚马逊盆地的朱鲁埃纳国家公园。
2011年，Ecosia的筹款超过25万欧元。[15]
从2013年7月到2014年9月，Ecosia支持了大自然保护协会运营的“种植10亿棵树”（Plant a Billion Trees）[16]项目。该项目旨在于2015年前种植100万棵本土树木，以恢复巴西大西洋森林。
2015年，在非洲联盟和世界银行的支持下，Ecosia开始为布基纳法索的植树造林项目捐赠，这是旨在防止荒漠化的非洲绿色长城项目的一部分。
Ecosia是B-labs认证的公益企业。B-labs称，截止2015年1月，“搜索引擎自2009年12月成立以来，将80%的广告收入捐出，筹资超过150万美元用于保护雨林”。[17]截止2015年，Ecosia有近250万活跃用户，种植的树超过200万棵。
2015年5月，Ecosia被评选为“欧洲科技初创企业奖”的“欧洲之星”，入围“旨在改善社会的最佳欧洲初创企业”。[18]
2018年10月9日，Ecosia试图以100万欧元的价格从能源公司莱茵集团手中收购Hambach森林，以阻止该森林因褐煤开采而被砍伐，[19]但被莱茵集团拒绝。 [20]
从2020年1月23日起，Ecosia将其获得的利润捐赠给了非政府组织ReForest Now。该组织不仅计划恢复森林，而且宣称能使该地区更能抵御未来的火灾。ReForest Now宣称将使用这些钱种植26446棵树。[21][22]
2020年10月，Ecosia宣布购买了银行卡公司TreeCard20％的股份[23][24]，并计划在2021年与万事达合作推出新的银行卡。[25]在这项计划中，TreeCard将使用英国樱桃木制成的木质卡（每棵树可制成30万张木质卡），以取代普通的塑料银行卡[24][25]，并将80％的利润用于Ecosia的植树项目。根据计算，客户需要花费60美元来资助一棵树。[24]银行卡还可以链接到Apple Pay、Google Pay和Samsung Pay完成支付。目前TreeCard已经开放注册。[26][23][24]

根据Ecosia的博客，目前Ecosia的项目覆盖27个国家或地区，包括秘鲁、尼加拉瓜、哥伦比亚、海地、巴西、摩洛哥、西班牙、塞内加尔、布基纳法索、加纳、马达加斯加、乌干达、坦桑尼亚、埃塞俄比亚、肯尼亚、印度尼西亚、苏丹、马里、英国、科特迪瓦、加拿大、卢旺达、玻利维亚、美国、澳大利亚、印度和马拉维。[31]
截止2020年7月，Ecosia种植的树木总数超过了1亿株，每月从大气中吸收超过5万吨的二氧化碳。[32][33][34][35]同月报道，通过广告收益，Ecosia平均每0.8秒就能种一棵树，每分钟种75棵，每天种108,000棵。[34]
浏览器集成和应用程序编辑
Ecosia的扩展程序可分别从Chrome网上应用商店或Mozilla的Add-ons下载。[36][37]
在2018年3月，Firefox在59.0版本中将Ecosia添加到德语版的搜索引擎选项中。[38]
从2020年3月12日起，Ecosia被列为Google Chrome的默认搜索引擎选项，成为首个被列入的非盈利搜索引擎。[39]
2020年12月14日，苹果的Safari网络浏览器在MacOS Big Sur 11.1、iOS 14.3和iPadOS 14.3中也将Ecosia列为默认搜索引擎选项。[40]
2021年1月28日，Ecosia宣布与Brave浏览器建立合作关系，被纳入Brave浏览器的官方搜索引擎之一。[41][42]
Ecosia还发布了基于Chromium的免费网页浏览器EcoBrowser，可用于Android、iOS、Windows、MacOS。[5]
