生平编辑

他生于伦敦的巴特锡，是家中四个儿子中的老三^[2]。他母亲Sylvia R. (née Leonard)是位美发师，父亲Joseph L. Spall在邮局工作^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]。

最初他在皇家莎士比亚剧团参与演出。1981年与 Shane 结婚，两人育有三个孩子：Pascale (1976年生)，Rafe (1983年生，也是名演员)，Mercedes (1985年生)。
